About us

Celebrating 90 Years of Language Learning

Established in 1934, Institute of Modern Languages was set up by The University of Queensland Senate to give more adults the chance to deepen their lives by inviting the community into the University through language learning. UQ IML facilitates language learning and cross-cultural communication, especially useful in today's multicultural society. IML also provides the opportunity for past UQ students - alumni to remain connected with their university in a meaningful way over the many years in which they are no longer engaged in formal study. This task is aided by accredited and dedicated language tutors, teaching in over 30 languages.

In 2024 the UQ Institute of Modern Languages is celebrating 90 Years of Language Learning.

Why you should choose IML

IML courses in 30 languages are taught by qualified, enthusiastic language tutors who are either native speakers or have native proficiency. You don’t need to enrol in a degree to study at IML. Our classes are open to the general public, have no pre-requisite or placement tests and are some of the most affordable in Brisbane. The cost of most IML courses is roughly $12 per hour. Most classes are currently held online via Zoom video conferencing software, however we currently have some courses being taught at The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus, where you can take advantage of the extensive campus facilities, transport options, and modern classrooms.

Lessons vary depending on the type of course, with courses offering between 2 and 6 contact hours per week.
