IML Japanese courses for Beginners

If you are new to face-to-face Japanese study, you can choose from one of the following options, depending on your availability and learning objectives. Survival and Short Courses focus on speaking and listening skills. The Scripts course aims to have students able to recognise and read the two basic Japanese alphabets - hiragana and katakana. Level 1 offers more in-depth study of Japanese, including speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and will prepare you for a Level 2 course.

IML Language Pathways

The choice of level is based on self-assessment. To select the most appropriate course, we encourage students to compare course outlines for each level. Students can also view the Level Guide below for more information.

High School Program

For students in the Senior phase of learning (Year 11 and 12) who wish to enrich their knowledge and enhance fluency of expression. Program content is based on themes and topics specified in the Qld Curriculum & Assessment Authority (QCAA) Senior Syllabi and in the International Baccalaureate program (IB).

Japanese for Teachers

For teachers and prospective teachers of Years 11-12 Japanese. Course content is based on the new QCAA Japanese 2019 Senior Syllabus (Kanji, vocabulary, cultural aspects and activities relevant to associated topics, with a focus on Units 2-4). Japanese language use: 90-100% immersion.
